There are 10 habituated gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park available for trekking every day. You will experience life-changing moments in the wild as you encounter these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Detailed day-by-day itinerary for 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Pick up from Airport- Volcanoes National Park

Upon your arrival in Rwanda, your driver guide will be ready to pick you up from the airport and drive you to Rwanda’s Capital, Kigali. Depending on your time of arrival, you will enjoy a tour city around Kigali city just after having lunch. You will visit a number of sites including the genocide memorial site, markets, and museums.  This tour will give you a picture of Rwanda’s capital, one of the most developing cities in Africa.

After a short tour in Kigali, you will embark on a transfer to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The journey is about 80 km from Kigali, 2 to 3 hours drive. You will arrive in the late evening and you will check in at your already booked accommodation. At your lodge, you will have dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking-Volcanoes national park – 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari 

On this second day of your 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari, you will wake up early in the morning and enjoy a hefty breakfast. Your driver guide will pick you up after breakfast and transfer you to the park headquarters(visitors center).

You will arrive just in time and join the other travelers for the briefing session. During the briefing, you will be provided with all the information and guidelines of gorilla trekking. You will be told the dos and don’ts during the gorilla trekking experience. After the briefing, you will be allocated a gorilla group. There are about 10 gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park. The allocation of a gorilla group is influenced majorly by your physical fitness levels, health and age. If you are interested in a particular group, we recommend that at this time of the tour, you tell your driver guide so that he can negotiate with the rangers to see if you can be allocated to that group.

You will then head into the forest to search for these endangered primate species. you will be led by experienced and armed ranger guides so your safety and security in the forest is guaranteed. This activity is really thrilling as you will have amazing views of the Virungas, and when you meet the gentle giants you will watch them play, feed, among other things, which is an unforgettable experience. You will spend about one hour with the gorillas before returning back to the visitors center.

Later after trekking your driver guide will drive you back to the lodge for a late lunch. To make more of your adventure while here, you can take an evening walk in the community.

Day 3: Golden monkey tracking or optional Dian Fossey tomb visit

On the third day of your Rwanda 4 days tour, you will wake up and have breakfast early enough and go for golden Monkey tracking. Your driver guide will take you to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about golden monkey tracking. Golden monkeys are more comfortable with flashlights, unlike mountain gorillas. After the briefing, you will head into the forest to search for these endangered primates. After locating them, you will enjoy watching them as they feed, play and groom their young ones. You will have plenty of opportunities to take photographs and record videos. The ranger guide will give you information about these amazing creatures, their behavior, about the forest among others.

After your trek which last anywhere between 1 to 4 hours, you will return to your starting point from where you will meet your driver guide. You can include the optional visit to the Dian Fossey tomb.

While at the tomb, you will find out a lot concerning this primatologist who once took care of mountain gorillas (please note that; optional activities are not included in the final costing). You will later return to the lodge for lunch.

Day 4: Kigali city tour- Departure

Today marks the end of your 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari. After a breakfast, you will check out of your accommodation and transfer to Kigali airport. Upon arriving to Kigali, you will go for a city tour and visit a few places like pottery projects, markets, handicraft shops, the national museum. You will later have lunch and drive to the airport for your flight back home.
