Detailed day-by-day itinerary for 5 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates tour

 

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali – Transfer to Nyungwe forest

Your driver guide will pick you up at the airport or your hotel in the morning to start your Rwanda 5 days tour. He/she will brief you about your tour and after the briefing, the driver will take you for a 2-hour tour of Kigali, Rwanda’s Capital.

Rwanda’s Kigali city is a small but very well organized city. While in Kigali, you will visit the Genocide memorial Centre, the palace of the former president of Rwanda, the main city market and artisan shops. You will learn about the tragic incidents that happened to the people of Rwanda and also see the local setting of this amazing city.  You will after embark on a transfer to Nyungwe forest after touring Kigali.

Nyungwe National Park is located in the southwestern part of Rwanda and it takes about 5 hours by road transfer. Your transfer will be colorful as you will enjoy the scenic beauty of Rwanda’s landscapes and scenery.  During the journey, your driver guide will stop at several places along the way. You will stop over for lunch in a station hotel/restaurant along the way. You will arrive at your booked accommodation in the late evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking – Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest

On day two of your 5 days safari, you will wake up very early and have breakfast at your lodge. Your driver guide will arrive just in time to transfer you to Nyungwe forest offices for briefing on chimpanzee tracking. During the briefing, you will get insights into the history of this fascinating park, wildlife to be found, what to expect and how to prepare. You will also be advised on how to stay safe during your trek. The duration of the chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the primates.

After the briefing you will then head out for a chimpanzee trekking adventure. You will be escorted by very experienced Guide/Rangers. During the trek if lucky enough, you will encounter several other resident primate species such as Golden monkeys, and vervet monkeys among others. When you finally locate the chimps in the forest, you will be allowed an exclusive hour in their presence. You will have plenty of opportunities to take photographs, and record videos. After one hour with chimps, you will return back to the starting point where your driver guide will be waiting for you.

 

After tracking the chimpanzees, you will be taken back to your lodge for lunch and rest. Late in the afternoon, you will go for the forest canopy walk. This unique and thrilling suspended walkway is one of a kind in East Africa.  You will have the opportunity to get an aerial view of the park while working across the long suspended walkway. While on this walkway, you will see the scenic view of this forest with its diversity. You can spot butterflies, birds, primates and the different trees species while here. After this experience, you will return back to the visitors center and embark on a transfer back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park – Visit the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera

On this third day of your 5 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates tour, you will wake up lazily and have breakfast before checkout. Your driver guide will be waiting to pick you and start the journey to the Volcanoes National Park. You will drive by the beautiful Lake Kivu and other beautiful features.

You will enjoy the scenic and beautiful countryside with rolling hills, green plantations and welcoming people on your way to Volcanoes. During the tour, you will have a stopover to have lunch along the way. Once you reach the park, you will check in and have a rest before going out to visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. If you arrive on time, you can take a boat and visit the islands or watch the birds.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking – Tour the Iby’iwacu cultural village – 5 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates tour

Day four of this tour is the day for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. You will wake up early in the morning and have breakfast before heading to the park headquarters. Briefing for gorilla tracking at the volcanoes national park starts at 7:00 am.

You will request your hotel to pack your lunch and enough drinking water since trekking has an unpredictable duration.  During the briefing, you will be given all the gorilla trekking rules, and information about what to expect and the creatures in the park.

Rwanda has 10 habituated gorilla families which are available for trekking every day. You will be assigned to a gorilla group, based on your overall fitness and age among other factors. The time taken tracking mountain gorillas is unpredictable but can last anywhere between 2 to 6 hours.

There is no need to worry about your safety and security while tracking mountain gorillas since it is guaranteed as mountain gorillas are generally calm and peaceful. To make your journey more memorable, take as many photos of the group as you will be with them for only one hour.

 

Once you have finished observing the primates for one hour, you will go back to the starting point where you will find your driver guide waiting for you. Since we anticipate that you have your packed lunch, you will have lunch before transferring back to the hotel for a short rest and refreshment. Later in the evening, you will visit the Iby’iwacu cultural village which is very close to the park. While here you will indulge yourself in Rwanda’s culture as you enjoy watching traditional dance performances and visit each part of the facility to learn about the culture of the different tribes in Rwanda. After this experience, you will return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Golden Monkey Trekking – Departure

On this day, you will embark on trekking the endangered Golden monkeys. You will wake up early once again, have breakfast, and proceed to the park offices in Kinigi. You will meet other travelers at the center, and you will be briefed on golden monkey trekking. After the briefing, the park guides will take you into the forest to search for the amazing primates.

Unlike gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking in Rwanda takes a shorter duration. You will complete the activity in a few hours and you will head back to your hotel to refresh and have lunch.

You will explore the forest as you search for these primates and when you finally encounter them, you will enjoy watching them.  Golden monkeys are very playful and feel very comfortable with flash cameras unlike gorillas. After spending time with the primates, you will head back to the starting point and find your driver guide waiting to take you back to the hotel for checkout before departing to Kigali. You will drive back to Kigali, a journey of about 2 to 3 hours. Your driver guide will drop you off at your preferred drop-off point (hotel or Airport)
