About the Sanctuary

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in early 2005 with the primary goal of protecting the endangered Rhinos. The Sanctuary covers about 70 square kilometers. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is managed by a private and nonprofit company that works hand in hand with the Uganda Wildlife Authority with the aim of increasing the rhino numbers in Uganda – and protecting these endangered species and their habitat.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to other top wildlife and bird life with over 300 different bird species registered here. The Sanctuary is also home to about 40 different mammal species and primates like hippos, Crocodiles, antelopes, lions, elephants, Black colobus monkeys, and bush duikers among others.

Rhino tracking in at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary normally takes about one to two hours depending on where Rhinos are located but before these tourists go track, they are briefed on a few things, especially on how to handle themselves accordingly.   • Tourists are required to acquire Rhino Tracking permits before they embark on the rhino tracking experience in Ziwa
  • Tourists are required to follow instructions given to them by the Sanctuary guides at all times. Feel free to ask them any questions regarding the rules and the animals.
  • Tourists are advised to report to the Rhino Fund Reception any illegal wildlife kills along the road.
  • It is important to note that any unguided/unauthorized tour activity is considered illegal. This is especially so if it is done beyond 17:30 pm.
  • For your own safety and that of the animals, any attempts at feeding or touching them are forbidden.
  • Tourists are advised to avoid littering within the Park. Any litter should be properly disposed of in the available bins.
  • Cycling and jogging cannot be done anywhere and at any time within the Sanctuary.
  • While at the entrance, declare any firearms, GPS, Pets, Drones, or any other item that may cause suspicion.
  • Unnecessary noise of any sort within the sanctuary is strictly not allowed. While with the animals, switch off your cell phones or simply put them in Silent mode.
